The Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999 (IRR99)

These Regulations, which replace similar 1985 regulations, came into operation on 1 Jan 00. They affect employers who engage in work with ionising radiations beyond certain limits given in Schedule 1 of the Regulations.

Regulation 13 deals with the appointment of radiation protection advisers (RPAs). In addition, Schedule 5 lists the areas in which an employer needs to consult one or more RPAs.

In many cases the nature of the work with ionising radiation is straight forward and, after an initial period of consultation, contact may be limited to the odd phone call and perhaps the occasional visit by the RPA.

Internet-RPA has been set up to cater for such cases. It aims to provide consultation primarily through the internet (and/or fax). Responses will not be immediate, but will be available normally in 1 - 3 working days (faster in genuinely urgent situations). In this way costs can be minimised. Should a visit become advisable, this can be done by mutual agreement.
